10 myths about men's sexual health
Last reviewed: 01.07.2025
Despite the fact that there is no shortage of information in our time, and magazines and TV shows actively educate us about health, diseases and their treatment, the sphere of men's health is still surrounded by myths and speculations, which are believed, first of all, by men themselves.
Myth #1 Size and its meaning
The most common myth is that penis size matters. Despite the fact that this fiction has been refuted many times by medical scientists, men still believe that penis size affects physiological functions. However, this is a mistake, unless a man is lucky enough to have a micropenis. Men with a long penis do not have more testosterone or greater fertility. The only difference is their high self-esteem.
Myth #2 Foot size = penis length
The length of the penis depends solely on hereditary data and does not interact with other parts of the body. Urologists have not found a correlation between the size of the foot, hand, nose, etc. and the length of the penis.
Myth #3 The penis cannot be broken
Despite the fact that there is no bone in the penis, a fracture can occur in an erect state. This can happen if the woman is on top during sex. The tissue of the cavernous bodies, filled with blood, is torn, and a distinct crunch can be heard when a fracture occurs. The injury requires immediate treatment, otherwise there is a risk that the man will remain impotent.
Myth #4 Swimming trunks make sperm worse
High temperatures have an effect on sperm production. This can happen, for example, if a man constantly wears tight jeans. For the sperm production process to proceed normally, the temperature must be 3-5 degrees lower than normal body temperature. And even the fact that swimming trunks fit the body tighter than boxer shorts does not change the temperature.
Myth #5: 18 years is the peak of male sexual activity
This is half true, considering that by the age of 18, testosterone levels in a man's body reach their maximum. But it is responsible not only for sexual activity, but also for other functions, such as the formation of muscle mass.
Myth #6 A hair dryer and a hat are a sure way to go bald
Scientists have not confirmed these assumptions. Baldness occurs due to the reduction of hair follicles, which ultimately leads to thinning and loss of hair. Drying hair with a hair dryer can only make it brittle and dry, but it has nothing to do with the formation of bald spots.
Myth #7 The more you shave, the faster your stubble grows
This is true only for a couple of hours immediately after shaving, then hair growth slows down. Neither shaving nor cutting can make hair thicker, darker or coarser. The blade does not reach the roots of the hair, which are deep under the skin. Density depends only on the shape and size of the hair follicles, which are regulated by androgens.
Myth #8 Prostate cancer is the most dangerous for men
Undoubtedly, prostate cancer is a very serious and dangerous disease, but the most common cause of death from cancer is lung cancer. One in 36 patients dies from prostate cancer.
Myth #9 Men can't get breast cancer
In very rare cases, but still, breast cancer among men occurs. Out of a thousand men, one can get this type of cancer. Chronic liver disease, high estrogen levels, obesity and alcoholism are the most important factors that can provoke this disease.
Myth #10 Osteoporosis is not dangerous for men
Although men account for only 20% of 100% of patients, older men with low testosterone levels are at risk. Risk factors include smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking steroids.
