Symptoms of osteoporosis in children

In most cases, osteoporosis is asymptomatic. Complications of severe osteoporosis include fractures of tubular bones, and in glucocorticoid osteoporosis, more often compression fractures of the vertebrae. As a result, a number of patients complain of a feeling of fatigue in the back, especially with vertical load, pain in the thoracic or lumbar spine, which are caused by compression of the nerve roots by vertebrae deformed due to a compression fracture. The severity of the pain syndrome may vary: from severe pain that immobilizes the patient to sensations that occur only when pressing or tapping on the vertebrae. Moderate pain decreases or disappears after resting in a lying position.
Vertebral fractures can also result in decreased growth, chest deformation, and a “hump” (thoracic kyphosis), which is especially pronounced in adult patients.
It should be remembered that if a child has a bone fracture when falling from a height of his own height without acceleration, it is necessary to examine him for the diagnosis of osteoporosis in children. This does not apply to situations with a fracture of the bones of the skull, flat bones, phalanges of the fingers.
