Indications Sodium iodide

Iodide Sodium is assigned:

• with excessive production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland;
• with an increase in the thyroid gland;
• as a preventive agent with a high radioactive background;
• before surgical interventions for intoxication with thyroid hormones;
• for diseases of the respiratory tract, including bronchial asthma;
• inflammatory diseases of the eyes;
• as an auxiliary treatment for syphilis.

Release form

Sodium iodide is available in the form of a white powder, which is odorless, with a salty taste. The powder dissolves in water, glycerin, alcohol and is intended for oral administration.

Pharmacodynamics

Sodium iodide regulates the production of hormones by the thyroid gland, in particular, inhibits the production of thyroid hormones.

Pharmacokinetics

Sodium iodide has antiseptic properties, participates in the enzymatic breakdown of proteins, stimulates sputum production at the reflex level. With an increased radioactive background, taking the drug can save the thyroid gland from the harmful effects of radiation and prevent accumulation of radioactive iodine.

The half-life is approximately 10 minutes. It accumulates mainly in the thyroid gland, is excreted by the kidneys and with feces within 24 hours (the parameters can vary depending on the age, sex of the patient, and also the functional state of the thyroid gland).

Dosing and administration

Sodium iodide is taken by the course, which is determined by the attending physician taking into account the disease and the condition of the patient.

Usually the drug is taken in the form of a solution (in heavy states of sodium iodide is administered intravenously). A day is prescribed from 0.9 to 4 g of substance, the daily dose is recommended to be divided into several receptions.

Dissolved powder should be washed down with gastric mucosa protecting drinks (jelly, milk).

With intravenous administration the drug is administered once every few days, the course of treatment - 8-12 injections.

Use Sodium iodide during pregnancy

Sodium iodide is not used to treat pregnant women.

Contraindications

Sodium iodide is not used in case of allergy to iodine, kidney disease, inflammatory processes on the skin, including acne, during pregnancy, tuberculosis, allergic dermatitis.

Sodium iodide can cause inflammation in the respiratory tract and mucous membranes (nasal and oral cavity, mucous eyes), runny nose, skin rash, angioedema.

Overdose

Sodium iodide in high doses can provoke tachycardia, increased photosensitivity, fever, sleep disorder, irritability.

If symptoms of an overdose should stop taking the drug and consult a specialist, it is also necessary to completely exclude the use of salicylates (sialdgin, ascofen, tsitramon, cefekon, etc.).

Interactions with other drugs

Sodium iodide is not compatible with salicylates, with alkaloids and other nitrogenous bases (theophylline, atropine, caffeine, etc.).

Storage conditions

Sodium iodide should be stored in a place protected from light and moisture, and should not be allowed to reach children. Sodium iodide outdoors begins to recycle and release iodine, which can reduce its therapeutic properties.
