An ankle brace is used in orthopedics to reduce pain and improve the function of this joint. This is achieved by limiting pronation and supination in the subtalar joint, movements in the sagittal plane.

The main causes of dysfunction in arthritis are pain syndrome and dynamic instability due to the involvement of periarticular soft tissues in the inflammatory process.

Indications and contraindications

Indications: subtalar joint instability; excessive pronation; foot drop.

An ankle brace is contraindicated in cases of peripheral blood supply disorders in the lower extremities (relative contraindication).

Methodology and aftercare

Before selecting or manufacturing a fixing device, it is necessary to conduct a thorough assessment of the condition and range of motion in the joint structures.

There are mass-produced and custom-made ankle orthoses; according to their degree of rigidity, they are divided into soft (bandages), semi-rigid and rigid (tutors).

Effect. Reduced pain and improved walking parameters due to stabilization of joint structures. Experiments using semi-rigid structures have shown a reliable decrease in the amplitude of inversion movements.

Factors affecting efficiency; degree of instability and correct choice of rigidity of the fixing device.

Complications: With the correct size and design, complications have not been described.

Alternative methods: If the ankle brace is ineffective and the deformity progresses, surgical treatment is indicated.
