Release form
It is available in the form of oral drops or solution, and also as syrup and tablets.
The drops are contained in 10 or 30 ml bottles. Each pack contains 1 bottle, closed with a special dropper cap.
The oral solution is contained in glass vials (volume 5 ml); a separate package contains 10 vials with the medicine.
The syrup is available in glass bottles of 75 or 150 ml. Each individual pack contains 1 bottle of syrup and a measuring cap.
The chewable tablets are packed in blisters, with 10 pieces inside each. The pack contains 3 blister strips.
Pharmacodynamics
The medicine contains iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose, which prevents the processes of prooxidant action of iron.
After the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream, iron ions are synthesized with the element fertin. Then iron begins to accumulate inside the body (this mainly occurs in the liver). This component is contained inside myoglobin with hemoglobin, as well as other enzymes.
Pharmacokinetics
The absorption rate of iron depends on the dose taken and the amount of iron already present in the body. Thus, in the case of iron deficiency, the absorption rate of this substance from the gastrointestinal tract becomes higher. The absorption of the drug is mainly carried out through the small intestine and the duodenum.
Some of the drug that is not absorbed into the bloodstream is excreted in the feces. The process of iron excretion is quite slow, excretion occurs mainly with urine, and also with bile. Excretion also occurs during exfoliation of the gastrointestinal tract and skin epithelium. A small amount of iron is lost in women during menstruation.

Dosing and administration
Oral solution and drops. It is necessary to dissolve the indicated dosage of the drug in a small amount of juice or other non-alcoholic beverage.
The syrup should also be taken orally. The required dose is measured out through a measuring cap. It is also allowed to dissolve the syrup in juice or some other non-alcoholic beverage.
Chewable tablets are taken orally - they can be either chewed or swallowed whole. In this case, they must be washed down with water or another liquid.
The duration of therapy, as well as the dose sizes (regardless of the form of the drug used) are selected for each person individually; this should be done by the attending physician.
To correct iron deficiency anemia in premature infants, the usual dosage is 2.5-5 mg/kg once daily.
For infants under 1 year of age (treatment of iron deficiency anemia), the drug is usually prescribed in the amount of 25-50 mg once a day. In the case of hidden iron deficiency or as a preventive measure for the development of iron deficiency, 15-25 mg of the drug should be taken once a day.
For children aged 1-12 years (to eliminate iron deficiency anemia), the dose is usually 50-100 mg of the drug once a day, and when treating latent iron deficiency or preventing the development of deficiency, it is necessary to take 25-50 mg of the drug once a day.
For adolescents from 12 years of age and adults (and lactating women) during the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, a single dose of 100-300 mg of the drug is prescribed. When eliminating latent iron deficiency, and also for prevention, 50-100 mg of the drug is taken once a day.
Pregnant women suffering from iron deficiency anemia are often prescribed 200-300 mg of the drug once a day. To eliminate latent iron deficiency or prevent the development of the disease, it is necessary to drink 100 mg of the drug once a day.
The duration of the therapeutic course for the elimination of iron deficiency anemia is often 5-7 months.
In case of iron deficiency anemia in a pregnant woman, it is recommended to take the medicine until the moment of delivery to restore the iron level in the body.
When eliminating latent iron deficiency, the treatment course usually lasts 1-2 months.
Use Maltofera during pregnancy
There is no information on the safety of using the drug during the first trimester.
In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, the drug may be prescribed by the attending physician, but only in cases where the probable benefit to the woman outweighs the likelihood of adverse effects in the fetus.
If Maltofer needs to be taken during lactation, you should consult your doctor about the need to stop breastfeeding during the treatment period.
Contraindications
A contraindication to taking the drug is the patient’s intolerance to individual components of the drug.
In addition, it should not be prescribed if a person has pigment cirrhosis or hemosiderosis, and at the same time if the patient has problems with iron excretion (such disorders include thalassemia, sideroachrestic anemia, and anemia caused by lead intoxication).
It is also prohibited to use Maltofer in the treatment of megaloblastic or hemolytic anemia.
When using the drug in people with diabetes, it is necessary to remember that 1 ml of oral drops contains 0.01 bread units; 1 tablet and 1 ml of syrup contain 0.04 bread units; and 5 ml of oral solution contains 0.11 bread units.
Side effects Maltofera
The drug is generally well tolerated, but in some people it may cause side effects such as vomiting with nausea, epigastric pain and bowel disorders.
During the period of drug use, patients experience darkening of the color of their feces, but this effect has no medicinal value.
