Pharmacological group
Pharmachologic effect
Indications Gerovital
It is used mainly in elderly people with diseases affecting the cardiovascular system:
- therapy and prevention of vitamin deficiencies;
- prolonged or severe overloads of a physical or nervous nature;
- rehabilitation after severe pathologies or operations;
- prevention of the development of hypovitaminosis or iron deficiency anemia.
Release form
The drug is released in the form of an oral liquid - in bottles with a volume of 0.2 or 0.5 l.
Pharmacodynamics
Gerovital contains the trace element Fe, which is required for erythropoiesis processes. The Fe component is a component of hemoglobin and certain important tissue enzymes.
Plant-based extracts demonstrate bioactivity in relation to the activity of the CCC as well as the NS.
Hawthorn extract normalizes heart function, lowers elevated blood pressure and increases the resistance of the heart muscle to hypoxia.
Motherwort extract has a mild sedative effect, reduces anxiety and fear, and at the same time reduces excitability and irritability.
The principle of the influence of drugs is related to the action of its constituent components. Vitamins are part of important enzymes that regulate the metabolism of lipids with carbohydrates and proteins. In addition, they participate in the metabolism of minerals. Vitamin deficiency in the food consumed by a person leads to a disorder of cellular metabolism, weakening of tissue trophism, deterioration of cell growth and restoration, and a decrease in immune activity.
Dosing and administration
The medicine should be taken before or with meals. The standard dose is 5 ml twice a day (1 tablespoon equals 5 ml of the medicine).
The treatment should last at least 1 month. The exact duration is determined individually for the patient by the attending physician.
- Application for children
The drug is not prescribed in pediatrics.
Use Gerovital during pregnancy
The drug is not used for treatment in breastfeeding or pregnant women. Toxicology tests have not been performed in these groups of patients.
Contraindications
Main contraindications:
- various disorders of Fe absorption;
- allergy associated with any of the components of the drug;
- hypervitaminosis;
- hypersiderosis.
Side effects Gerovital
Often, side effects develop due to intolerance to any element of the drug.
Overdose
There is currently no information regarding drug overdose. Intoxication may lead to symptoms of hypervitaminosis.
Retinol poisoning can cause diarrhea, alopecia, pain in the bones, head or abdomen, as well as fainting, vomiting, hepatosplenomegaly, nausea and hemorrhages of a subperiosteal nature.
In case of nicotinamide intoxication, epidermal rashes or sudden severe hyperhidrosis may appear, and in addition, the heart rate may increase and breathing may become difficult.
In case of such disorders, symptomatic actions are performed.
Poisoning with other elements of the drug is extremely unlikely. If an overdose of Fe occurs, deferoxamine is used for detoxification.
Interactions with other drugs
The use of the drug causes a weakening of the therapeutic effect of levodopa (due to the inclusion of pyridoxine in the composition of the multivitamin combination).
Retinol reduces the medicinal effects of betamethasone.
In case of combined use of the drug and cycloserine, penicillamine or isonicotinic hydrazide, the activity of pyridoxine is weakened.
The effects of salicylates are enhanced when vitamin C is used.
In addition, vitamin C weakens the intensity of the effects of tricyclics, nitrofurantoin, anticoagulants, as well as fluphenazine with isoprenaline.
Absorption of vitamin B9 is reduced when the drug is combined with sulfasalazine, methotrexate, trimethoprim, and also with triamterene, anticonvulsants and pyrimethamine.
Anticonvulsants potentiate metabolic processes, as well as biliary elimination of cholecalciferol.
When Gerovital is administered together with biguanides, the absorption of cyanocobalamin is weakened.
The combination of colestyramine with laxatives based on mineral oils leads to a decrease in the absorption of retinol, tocopherol and calciferol.
The therapeutic activity of pyridoxine is weakened when used with isoniazid.
A decrease in its blood levels associated with the potentiation of Zn elimination occurs when used together with disulfiram, cimetidine, phenytoin, as well as with GCS, diuretics, tetracycline, penicillamine, isoniazid with valproic acid, mercaptopurine with captopril, and also with ethambutol.
Estrogens, which are part of hormonal contraception, can increase blood levels of retinol and vitamin C; in addition, they decrease folate levels.
Fluorouracil and vinblastine with bleomycin and cisplatin reduce the absorption of retinol, as well as pyridoxine and thiamine.
A decrease in the absorption of the element Fe occurs when combined with tetracyclines or non-systemic antacids.
The effect of penicillamine and isoniazid causes potentiation of thiamine excretion, due to which their therapeutic effect may be weakened.
Storage conditions
Gerovital should be stored in a place out of reach of small children. The temperature level should not exceed 25°C.
Shelf life
Gerovital is allowed to be used within a 36-month period from the date of release of the pharmaceutical product. The shelf life of an opened bottle is 90 days.
Analogues
Analogues of the drug are the drugs Gerimaks, Trivit and Biovital with Kiddi Pharmaton, and also Energin and Decamevit with Multimax.
