Bipolar affective disorder

Bipolar affective disorder is a mood disorder in which episodes of depression and mania or hypomania can occur. Previously, this disease was designated by the term "manic depression" (or manic-depressive psychosis), reflecting its phenomenology. From a major depression, also called unipolar depression, bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes of inadequately elevated mood.
