The coccyx (os caccygis) is the result of the fusion of 3-5 rudimentary coccygeal vertebrae (vertebrae coccygeae). The coccyx is triangular in shape, slightly curved forward. The base of the coccyx faces upward, the apex faces downward and forward.

For articulation with the sacrum, there are coccygeal horns (cornua coccygea). In adolescence, especially in women, the coccygeal vertebrae are connected by layers of cartilaginous tissue.
