Classification of HIV infection

WHO recommends that four stages of the disease be distinguished:

  • initial (acute);
  • persistent generalized lymphadenopathy;
  • AIDS-associated complex as pre-AIDS;
  • unfolded AIDS.

In addition, recently offer to identify and the fifth stage of the disease - AIDS dementia.

In Ukraine, a clinical classification of HIV infection was adopted. Pokrovsky (1989):

  • I. Incubation stage;
  • II. Stage of primary manifestations;
    • A. Acute fever phase,
    • B. Asymptomatic phase,
    • B. Persistent generalized lymphadenopathy.
  • III. Stage of secondary diseases:
    • A. Loss of body weight less than 10%, superficial fungal, viral, bacterial lesions of the skin and mucous membranes; herpes zoster; repeated pharyngitis, sinusitis.
    • B. Progressive weight loss of more than 10%; unexplained diarrhea or fever more than 1 month; fibrous leukoplakia; pulmonary tuberculosis; repeated or persistent bacterial, fungal, viral, protozoal lesions of internal organs (without dissemination) or deep lesions of the skin and mucous membranes; repeated or disseminated herpes zoster; localized Kaposi's sarcoma.
    • B. Generalized bacterial, viral, fungal, protozoal and parasitic diseases; pneumocystis pneumonia; Candidiasis of the esophagus; atypical mycobacteriosis; extrapulmonary tuberculosis; cachexia; disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma; lesions of the central nervous system of various etiologies.
  • IV. Terminal stage.

In young children with high persistence, the following stages of the disease:

  • subclinical;
  • lymphadenopathic;
  • localized opportunistic infections;
  • generalized opportunistic infections.

At the subclinical stage, the clinical manifestations of HIV infection are completely absent.

  • 821.3 The disease caused by HIV, with manifestations of other malignant neoplasms of lymphatic, hematopoietic and related tissues.
