Allergomax is an anti-edematous medication intended for local use. It belongs to the group of sympathomimetics. This is a complex drug that contains dimethindene with phenylephrine.

The medication reduces the volume of secretions released from the nose and helps to clear the nasal passages without causing any disruption to the physiological activity of the nasal mucosa or the ciliated epithelium. [ 1 ]

Indications Alergomaxa

It is used to relieve symptoms of nasal congestion, colds, hay fever, chronic and active sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, chronic and active rhinitis, and vasomotor rhinitis. It can be used as an auxiliary substance in the case of the active phase of otitis media.

Prescribed in preparation for or after nasal surgery (here – to eliminate swelling of the paranasal sinuses and nasal mucosa).

Release form

The drug is released in the form of a nasal spray - inside 15 ml bottles, which are equipped with a special spray tip.

Pharmacodynamics

Phenylephrine is a class of amine sympathomimetics. It is prescribed as a nasal decongestant with moderate vasoconstrictor effect. It selectively stimulates the activity of α1-adrenergic endings of the cavernous tissues of the veins inside the nasal mucosa. As a result, swelling of the mucosa, as well as the paranasal sinuses, disappears quickly and for a long time. [ 2 ]

Dimethindene is an antagonist of H1-ends of histamine and has antiallergic activity. It demonstrates effectiveness when prescribed in small doses and is tolerated without complications.

Pharmacokinetics

The medication is prescribed for local use, and therefore its effect does not correlate with the plasma levels of the active ingredients.

In case of accidental oral ingestion, absorption occurs, during which the bioavailability of phenylephrine decreases and is approximately 38%; the half-life is approximately 2.5 hours.

The total bioavailability values of dimethindene when administered orally as a solution are approximately 70%; the half-life is approximately 6 hours.

Dosing and administration

Before starting the application procedure, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the nasal cavity.

The usual dosages used are 1-2 injections into each nostril, 3-4 times a day.

The bottle should be held vertically, with the tip facing up. When inserting the spray into the nostril, the head should be held straight. Next, press the spray once, pull the nozzle out of the nose, and release it. When injecting, inhale a little through the nose. The therapy period should be a maximum of 1 week (taking into account the intensity of the pathology).

For children aged 6-12 years, the procedure is performed only in the presence of an adult.

Use Alergomaxa during pregnancy

Tests related to the study of the use of dimethindene with phenylephrine during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not been performed. Given the possible development of a systemic vasoconstrictor effect of phenylephrine, it is necessary to refuse the administration of the drug to pregnant women.

The medication should not be used during breastfeeding.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for use by individuals with severe intolerance to any of the components of the drug.

Due to the presence of phenylephrine, the drug, like other vasoconstrictors, is not used for closed-angle glaucoma and atrophic rhinitis, and in addition, in people who use MAOIs (or have used them in the previous 2 weeks).

Side effects Alergomaxa

The medication is often tolerated without complications. Among the rare side effects are:

  • disorders associated with the sternum, mediastinum and respiratory tract: dryness or discomfort in the nasal cavity, as well as nosebleeds;
  • systemic disorders and symptoms in the area of application: systemic weakness, burning in the treatment area and the appearance of signs of allergy (including local epidermal ones - swelling of the face or eyelids, as well as itching throughout the body).

Overdose

Often, no disorders develop with an overdose. Stomach pain, fatigue, agitation, paleness of the epidermis, mild tachycardia and increased blood pressure have been observed occasionally. The following disorders associated with the sympathomimetic effect may also occur: premature contraction of the ventricles, potentiation of the heartbeat, tremor, pain in the occipital region or tremor. In addition, dizziness, vomiting, moderate sedation, nausea and mild anticholinergic symptoms may be observed.

The patient is prescribed activated carbon (small children may be prescribed laxatives (gastric lavage is not necessary)). You also need to drink as much liquid as possible.

Phenylephrine-associated increases in blood pressure can be reversed by α-adrenergic receptors.

Interactions with other drugs

Vasoconstrictors should be used with caution in patients taking tricyclics and antihypertensive medications (eg, beta-blockers), because the combination may potentiate the pressor effect of phenylephrine.
