The claimed effect of zinc

Some experts believe that zinc, taken soon after cold symptoms begin, in the form of zinc gluconate or zinc acetate lozenges, may shorten the duration of a cold. There is stronger evidence that in developing countries, supplements containing 20 mg of zinc plus iron once a week reduce mortality in infants with diarrhea and respiratory infection. There is also stronger evidence that supplements containing 80 mg of zinc plus antioxidants once a day slow the progression of moderate to severe atrophic (dry) age-related maculopathy in older adults.

Adverse effects of zinc

Zinc is generally safe, but toxicity may occur when used in high doses.
