How the child grows:
Just over 50 cm tall, your baby continues to grow and may now weigh almost 3.6 kg. Your baby is no longer as comfortable as before, so for his safety, your doctor will advise you to begin inducing labor next week. Most doctors do not recommend waiting longer than two weeks after your due date, as late labor increases the risk of complications. About 5 to 6 percent of women extend their pregnancy by three weeks.
Babies born after 42 weeks suffer from dry skin and excess weight. Late delivery also increases the risk of developing an infection in the uterus, which can be dangerous for the baby, and also increases the risk of stillbirth. In addition, there is a need for a cesarean section.
Important: Each baby's development is unique. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of fetal development.
Changes in the expectant mother
It's hard not to worry when labor doesn't start when your due date is up. But don't despair, you won't be pregnant forever. Labor will likely start on its own this week, or it will need to be induced by a doctor.
The methods used to induce labor will depend on the condition of the cervix. If it is not dilated and ready for labor, the doctor will use hormones or "mechanical" methods. Depending on the situation, the doctor may use drugs such as oxytocin to stimulate contractions. If these and other methods are not effective, a cesarean section will be performed.
In the meantime, tell your doctor right away if your baby's activity level decreases or you notice amniotic fluid leaking from your vagina.
