How the child grows:
Your baby now weighs approximately 300 grams and is 16.5 cm long. It is practicing the swallowing reflex and is passing meconium, a black, sticky digestion product. This sticky substance accumulates in the intestines, and you will be able to see it on the first day after birth.

Changes in the expectant mother
Congratulations! You're halfway there. The top of your uterus is level with your belly button, and you've probably gained about 10 pounds. Your weight will increase by about 1 pound each week. Make sure you're getting enough iron, a mineral needed to make hemoglobin (the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen). During pregnancy, your body needs more iron to keep up with your increasing blood volume. Red meat is one of the best sources of iron for pregnant women. Poultry (especially dark meat) and shellfish also contain iron. Doctors also recommend beans, soy products, spinach, and raisins.
If you haven't already signed up for a parenting class, do so now. Structured classes will help you and your partner prepare for labor.
A good night's sleep
As pregnancy progresses, women may experience difficulty sleeping. You may be surprised to learn that pregnant women often experience:
- Snoring. This is partly caused by large amounts of estrogen, which causes swelling of the mucous membranes.
- Heartburn and indigestion. Try to avoid foods that cause heartburn and do not eat immediately before bed.
- Leg cramps.
- Restless sleep. Do you often wake up and try to find a comfortable position? Place a pillow on either side of you and between your knees.
- Excessive sweating in the middle of the night. Due to hormonal changes, sweating is common in pregnant women.
This week's activity: Treat yourself. You're already halfway there, so you might as well treat yourself.
- Buy some nice pajamas, get a prenatal massage, or create a romantic atmosphere in your home with scented candles.
- Give yourself a keepsake: contact a professional photographer or artist.
- To feel attractive, buy some nice lingerie or book an appointment with a makeup artist.
