Curantil in pregnancy
Medical expert of the article
Last reviewed: 04.07.2025
Curantil is an angioprotective drug, a derivative of dipyridamole. It improves capillary circulation, dilates blood vessels, and thins the blood.
It is known that this drug is usually prescribed for angina, ischemic heart disease, thrombosis. However, Curantil is also prescribed during pregnancy, and quite often. Why? You will find the answer to this question in this article.
Indications for use
The drug is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of placental insufficiency, which occurs due to circulatory disorders in the placenta, with signs of fetal hypoxia, and a slowdown in its physical development (when the size of the fetus does not correspond to the gestational age).
In the early stages, Curantil serves as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of miscarriage or frozen pregnancy.
So, there may be the following indications for Curantil during pregnancy:
- increased blood clotting;
- capillary spasms;
- decreased body defenses;
- signs of cerebrovascular insufficiency;
- prevention of thrombosis;
- prevention and treatment of placental insufficiency and microcirculation disorders.
The effect of curantil during pregnancy
The well-known toxicosis during pregnancy is a disorder of the physiology of some organs, provoked by a violation of blood microcirculation. Edema, high blood pressure, headaches, muscle cramps, renal failure - all these symptoms originate from violations of capillary blood supply.
The drug does not act directly on the fetus, as it does not penetrate the placenta. However, by expanding the vessels of the placental membrane, Curantil helps improve the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the child.
Another ability of the drug is to thin the blood, cleanse the vessels from small blood clots. This is also very important, because thrombus formation in the vessels can lead to the cessation of the supply of nutrients to the fetus, which can provoke a frozen pregnancy or its spontaneous termination.
Curantil when planning pregnancy
When planning a pregnancy, doctors often prescribe Curantil along with hormonal and vitamin preparations. And this is done for a reason: these pills reduce the risk of thrombosis.
Curantil will facilitate blood supply to tissues, stabilize the tone of vascular walls, and prevent thrombosis of placental vessels. In the future, this will be able to provide the fetus with normal nutrition and oxygen delivery.
Sometimes it happens that increased blood clotting in the expectant mother does not allow the fertilized egg to develop normally. This leads to infertility, pregnancy fading. Therefore, the drug is often prescribed as a preventive measure, to improve blood microcirculation.
By improving microcirculatory processes in tissues, Curantil helps the endometrium (the mucous layer of the uterus) to grow, which significantly facilitates the process of attachment (implantation) of the egg. If the endometrium is too thin, implantation may not occur.
Another property of curantil is immunomodulatory. It determines the body's ability to resist infection. This is also of great importance when planning, because getting sick during conception and pregnancy is extremely undesirable.
Therefore, if your doctor has prescribed you Curantil, do not refuse to take it. The drug can really help you conceive your future baby.
Instructions for Curantil during pregnancy
How much curantil to drink during pregnancy? The exact dosage and duration of taking the drug is determined by the doctor on an individual basis. You should not take curantil on your own or adjust the doctor's prescriptions - this may affect the course of your pregnancy.
The dosage of Curantil during pregnancy is determined depending on the woman’s condition, the presence of any pathologies of the blood coagulation system and vascular disorders, and the individual reaction to the drug.
The maximum daily dose of Curantil can be 75-225 mg, divided into 3-5 doses. The prophylactic dose can be reduced to 25-50 mg per day. The maximum daily dose of the drug can be no more than 600 mg: such a dosage is prescribed for obvious pathologies of blood coagulation.
The tablets are taken before meals or an hour after, with a glass of clean water.
The course of Curantil during pregnancy can be quite long, in some cases up to the last weeks of pregnancy.
Curantil 25 is prescribed most often during pregnancy. The pills should be taken on an empty stomach, without chewing or damaging the tablet. This is the optimal dosage for a common treatment regimen: 25 mg in the morning, afternoon, and night.
Curantil 75 during pregnancy is distinguished by a high content of the active substance dipyridamole and can be prescribed by a doctor for existing pathologies in the body. 75 mg dragees are often used in the presence of signs of heart failure, cerebral circulation disorders, as a preventive measure against influenza, to reduce platelet aggregation.

Curantil in early pregnancy
Curantil can be prescribed in several courses throughout the entire period of gestation, but sometimes continuous use of the drug is also practiced.
Using Curantil in the first trimester helps to normalize the blood supply to the placenta. If the blood circulation is impaired, the future baby will not receive enough nutrients and oxygen. This problem is especially relevant if the pregnant woman has too thick blood.
In order to avoid excessive blood thinning with Curantil, it is necessary to carefully select the dosage of the drug, listening to the advice of the doctor.
If Curantil was prescribed as an immunomodulatory agent, it is necessary to understand that the harm caused to the unborn child from a viral infection is many times greater than the likelihood of side effects from taking the drug. Curantil effectively protects a woman from the danger of contracting ARVI, flu or ARI. And this is especially important in the early stages, when the fetus does not yet have its own protection - the placental membrane. Viruses, having penetrated the embryo, can provoke both termination of pregnancy and various disorders of its intrauterine development.
By prescribing Curantil in the early stages, the doctor "prepares the ground" for the further normal course of pregnancy. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid of taking the drug: the main thing is to follow the dosage prescribed by the doctor. And if unwanted side effects appear, you must consult with your doctor. Perhaps this drug is not suitable for you, and the doctor will replace it with another.
Curantil in late pregnancy
Late toxicosis during pregnancy is the main severe complication of this period. Gestosis is a violation of most vital processes in the expectant mother, which can lead to negative consequences for both the woman herself and the baby.
Late toxicosis develops more often at a later stage, in the last weeks of pregnancy. There are cases where this condition occurred even from the 20th week of pregnancy.
The primary cause of toxicosis in late pregnancy is considered to be circulatory disorders in pregnant women. Blood flow is disrupted in the smallest capillaries, the blood thickens, microcirculatory blood flow worsens, slows down, and vascular spasm is observed. This situation contributes to the fact that the most important functional organs do not receive the substances and oxygen they need. As a result, swelling develops, fluid is not removed from the tissues, which further aggravates the situation.
How can Curantil help in this case? By making the blood more liquid, relieving spasm of the vascular walls, stabilizing the tone of the capillaries, the drug prevents the development of such a pathological situation. And this is extremely important - to prevent such a serious complication, which threatens not only the normal course of pregnancy, but also the life of a woman.
The use of the drug at 34 weeks of pregnancy is very necessary to provide the child with adequate nutrition and prevent oxygen starvation of the developing brain, since at this stage the baby's brain is significantly developing, so the supply of nutrients and oxygen to it in the required volume is extremely important.
At 35 weeks of pregnancy, the fat layer and lungs of the fetus are formed. The baby is not yet strong enough to cope with possible hypoxia; often at this stage, a woman can hear the baby "hiccupping", and this is one of the signs of oxygen deficiency. This problem is easily solved by prescribing this medicine.
Prescribing the drug at 36 weeks of pregnancy is necessary to prevent delays in the baby's mental development due to the fact that the baby is already practically developed and is already capable of independent life. Brain development at this stage is simply rapid.
Use at 37 weeks is already important not so much for the baby as for the mother: the medicine will reduce swelling, improve the trophism of tissues and organs, which have a rather difficult time during this period.
Taking Curantil at 38 weeks of pregnancy will help prevent the development of preeclampsia in the pregnant woman, reduce swelling, and maintain normal blood supply to the placenta to prevent its premature detachment.
Curantil is prescribed by a doctor both for the treatment of pregnancy threats and for preventive purposes. If you doubt the advisability of taking the drug, do not hesitate to ask your doctor why Curantil was prescribed specifically for you. Do not decide to cancel the drug on your own.

Contraindications for use
The use of Curantil during pregnancy is contraindicated:
- in case of severe hypotension;
- in case of arrhythmia of unknown etiology;
- in hemorrhagic diathesis and other conditions of decreased blood clotting, with a tendency to bleeding;
- during periods of exacerbation of gastric ulcer;
- in case of allergy and development of hypersensitivity to the drug.
It is not recommended to take Curantil tablets with tea or coffee during pregnancy, as these drinks reduce the effectiveness of the drug. Curantil can enhance the effect of antihypertensive drugs, aspirin and blood thinners.
Side effects
Like most medications, Curantil is not without some side effects:
- increased heart rate, irregular heartbeat, decreased blood pressure, reddening of the skin on the face, feeling of heat;
- dyspeptic disorders, pain in the stomach, nausea;
- the appearance of hematomas on the body, increased bleeding;
- migraine, tinnitus;
- allergic reactions, skin rashes;
- feeling of weakness, pain in muscles and joints.
All side effects are transient in nature and completely disappear after discontinuation of the drug.
Analogues of Curantil during pregnancy
Curantil is an angioprotective (protecting blood vessels) and antithrombotic drug. If for some reason you cannot take this medication, consult a doctor: he or she has the right to replace this drug with another one with a similar mechanism of action.
Cardiomagnyl is a drug that can thin the blood, reducing platelet aggregation, like Curantil. However, it does not have a pronounced effect on the woman's immunity. Therefore, Cardiomagnyl can be prescribed to a pregnant woman with a tendency to thrombosis, embolism, heart failure, migraines. Sometimes, Cardiomagnyl is combined with Curantil. In this situation, the effect of the drugs is potentiated, which significantly increases their effectiveness.
Phlebodia is an effective angioprotector. Like Curantil, it improves capillary microcirculation, reduces venous congestion, accelerates lymph flow, and activates blood circulation. It has a minimum number of side effects, however, due to the lack of necessary clinical studies, taking the drug in early pregnancy is not recommended. As a rule, the drug is prescribed after the 12th week of gestation. The drug is considered a worthy replacement for Curantil, usually prescribed 1 tablet per day (600 mg).
Actovegin is a biostimulant drug that activates tissue metabolism. It increases the energy resources of cells, accelerates metabolic processes, eliminates hypoxia and insufficient tissue trophism. It can be prescribed as an alternative to Curantil, but also has a number of side effects. These are itchy dermatoses, urticaria, increased sweating, hyperthermia. If the body is not hypersensitive to the drug, Actovegin can be used 1-2 tablets three times a day before meals. In severe cases, injection of the drug is allowed.
Hofitol is a drug that protects and cleanses the liver, accelerates fat metabolism, and activates the removal of toxins from the body. This is a safe herbal remedy that can be used together with Curantil in the complex treatment of preeclamptic conditions, as well as in the first half of pregnancy as a preventive measure against toxicosis. This drug cannot serve as a full-fledged replacement for Curantil, but the combined use of the drugs enhances their beneficial effect. Hofitol is taken as standard, 1 tablet before meals three times a day.

Reviews of Curantil during pregnancy
Reviews of the drug are varied, and this is not surprising: the reaction to the drug can be individual depending on many reasons. The drug is suitable for some, but not for others. Of course, you should stop taking Curantil if allergic symptoms appear. Dizziness, reddened skin, destabilized blood pressure - consult a doctor. Perhaps this drug is not suitable for you.
However, there are also many positive reviews. Curantil helped many women who had problems with the blood coagulation system to get pregnant and give birth to a long-awaited baby. Some mothers note the beneficial effect of the drug in the development of fetal hypoxia.
There are also women who are against using this drug during pregnancy. This is due to insufficient scientific research of Curantil. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor, ask the questions that worry you. Only in this case will you be sure that neither you nor your future baby are in any danger.
The price of Curantil during pregnancy is from $4 to $6 per package (100 pills). Usually such a package is enough for about a month of intake.
Curantil can be used during pregnancy, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle: this way, you will significantly increase the effectiveness of the drug and make the pregnancy easier. Eat properly and nutritiously, limit your salt intake, walk more often in the fresh air, and perhaps you will not need medications.
