The Association of Applied Sciences of the United States found that the extract of onions has the same effect as modern chemotherapeutic methods during the treatment of colon cancer and colorectal cancer. In their new research project, scientists determined that onion therapy is safer than using chemicals with a number of side effects.

Preliminary experiments on rodents showed that the use of onion extract did not lead to a sharp increase in cholesterol in the blood, on the contrary, there were tendencies to reduce it. Now, in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment, there is a sharp increase in the level of cholesterol in the blood, which is quite a serious problem, since high cholesterol can trigger a stroke, a heart attack.

During the complex research, specialists established that onion extract reduces the rate of spread of intestinal cancer by almost 70% (in comparison with rodents who did not receive anticancer therapy). In the group of rodents who underwent a course of chemotherapy, the rate of cancer spread decreased by 68%, however the state of health of rodents who received onion extract was an order of magnitude better, since they did not have to endure the severe consequences of chemotherapy.

Experts are trying to find an alternative to chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer patients, since such treatment (depending on the drug) can give more than one hundred different side effects that often occur after the first procedure. The most common side effects of chemotherapy are hair loss, blindness (temporary), loss of ability to talk, paralysis, convulsions, coma. The greatest danger after chemotherapy is a metabolic disorder, which triggers an increase in the level of bad cholesterol.

Experts place high hopes on a new technique with the use of onion extract for the treatment of cancer patients. Experts admit that one onion extract can not stop the development of cancer or push the disease to remission, but the fact that such treatment can significantly slow down the progression of cancer is an indisputable advantage. In addition, this research project plays an important role in the development of complex treatment of bowel oncology.

At this stage, experts are trying to combine the onion extract with other active substances. In the future, they hope to get quite high-performance drugs that will increase the survival rate among patients with intestinal cancer.

Scientists have repeatedly examined the useful properties of onions. Several years ago it was found that the regular use of onions, as well as garlic, helps to reduce severe manifestations of femoral osteoarthritis, which causes severe pain and leads to loss of ability to work. As it turned out, diallyl disulfide, which is a part of garlic and onions, reduces the level of enzymes, which destroys the cartilage.
