Symptoms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are polymorphic and nonspecific, they range from asymptomatic forms to severe impairment of functional status and sudden death.

In children of early age, the detection of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is often associated with the appearance of signs of congestive heart failure, which develops more often than in older children and adults.

The main complaints in older children are:

  • fast fatiguability;
  • dyspnoea with physical exertion, and in some patients and at rest, at night, is caused by venous stagnation of blood in the lungs due to diastolic dysfunction of the hypertrophied left ventricle;
  • cardialgia, which is associated with a discrepancy between the coronary blood flow and the mass of the myocardium; the development of myocardial ischemia is affected by violations of the relaxation of the heart muscle, increased intramyocardial tension and compression of intramural coronary vessels;
  • dizziness and fainting, in some cases associated with a sharp decrease in cardiac output due to the aggravation of the obstruction to the expulsion of blood from the left ventricle, children are more likely to experience physical stress and emotional stress.
  • heartbeat, "interruptions" in the work of the heart, syncopal conditions may be due to heart rhythm disturbances.
