Declared effect of Echinacea

It is believed that Echinacea stimulates the immune system. If taken at the very beginning of a cold, it is stated that it reduces the duration of cold symptoms. This claimed effect has not been proven by studies. Local use can promote wound healing.

Adverse effects of Echinacea

Most adverse effects are mild and transient; they include dizziness, fatigue, headache and GI symptoms. No other adverse effects are known. Theoretically, autoimmune disorders, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, tuberculosis and organ transplants serve as a contraindication for Echinacea , because it can stimulate T cells. Echinacea inhibits certain enzymes of cytochrome P450 and stimulates others; it can therefore potentially interact with drugs metabolized by the same enzymes (eg, anabolic steroids, azole antifungal, methotrexate). Allergic reactions are possible in patients with pollen allergy.
